What Swing Analysis Actually Measures

Between the upload and the report, a specific pipeline turns pixels into numbers. Here's what it genuinely measures, tier by tier.

  • Pose detection tracks 21 keypoints across your body and club, frame by frame, turning pixels into a skeleton the AI can measure angles and rotations on.
  • The swing is segmented into 8 phases — Address, TakeAway, BackSwing, Top, DownSwing, Impact, FollowThrough, Finish — so every measurement is anchored to the moment it happens, not floating free.
  • Timing data — backswing duration, downswing duration, and the tempo ratio between them — is the most reliable tier: accurate to within a frame or two, about 15-30 milliseconds at 60fps.
  • Large body movements — shoulder turn, hip rotation, x-factor, lateral sway — are reasonably reliable and directionally right, which makes them useful for tracking change over time.
  • The analysis screens for 26 named faults (10 detectable from down-the-line, 16 from face-on), each returned with a severity — high, medium, or low — and the exact frame range where it occurs.
  • 17 scored dimensions feed a weighted overall score, and ball-flight tendency is inferred from club path and sequencing at roughly 75% accuracy on labelled swings.

What a Single Camera Can't Tell You

The measurements above are genuine. These are the limits that come with getting them from one ordinary camera instead of a lab.

  • Clubface angle, attack angle, and club path in three dimensions are estimated, not measured. The clubhead moves at over 100 mph and is often motion-blurred at consumer frame rates — treat these numbers as a hypothesis to test on the range, not a fact to build a swing change on.
  • Metrics that need a view you didn't film come back marked as unmeasurable rather than guessed. Kinematic sequence and x-factor need face-on video; head rise and spine angle need down-the-line. Those fields are excluded from the overall score instead of being filled with a plausible number.
  • Sensor-based systems, like Arccos, measure club and shot data directly from dedicated hardware sensors — more reliably than any camera-based tool, ours included, can from video alone. What you gain in mechanical insight from a camera, you trade for the automatically captured accuracy of a sensor.
  • The analysis names a probable cause, not a certain one. It crosses your measured parameters to point at what is most likely driving a fault — but it only ever sees what the camera saw. A cause that lives outside the frame, an old injury, a mobility limit, clubs that do not fit you, gets attributed to whatever is visible instead. Treat the named cause as the best-supported hypothesis, and check it against what you know about your own body.

Do I need a launch monitor or special equipment?

No. Any recent smartphone is enough — the analysis relies on pose estimation from ordinary video, not sensors or markers. A launch monitor measures club and ball data with instrument-grade precision but tells you nothing about your body; a dedicated 3D system resolves body positions more precisely than a single camera. Neither is required to get a swing report, but each does one thing better than a phone alone.

How should I film my swing for the best results?

Film face-on (perpendicular to your target line) or down-the-line (behind you, along the target line) — face-on reveals the most faults if you can only film one. Hold the phone at hand height, step back far enough to keep your whole body and the club in frame through the finish, shoot at 60fps or better, and wear fitted clothing against a contrasting background. Loose or dark clothing blurs the outline pose detection depends on, and anything below 60fps lets the moment of impact fall between frames.

Can AI swing analysis replace a human coach?

No, and it isn't trying to. AI is consistent, available anytime, and measures timing more precisely than a human eye ever will.
